Secret Checkpoints Added to
SAFECON 2008 Navigation Event

San Diego, CA - For the SAFECON 2008 navigation event, secret checkpoints will be added to the navigation routes to encourage contestants to look outside of the cockpit as well as maintaining their planned groundspeeds over the course. One or more secret checkpoints will be added to each route used for the event.

Contestants will not be given the location of the checkpoints which may be canvas symbols or geographical landmarks not indicated on sectional charts. Judges will be placed on the ground at each of the secret checkpoints. The safety observer crew member must now be on the lookout for these points. Not finding the secret checkpoints can result in 50 - 600 penalty points (see rule II.C.8.g.)
